Police, borough officials holding info session on predatory scams often targeting seniors
Members of the police and Borough Council have set the dates of several informational seminars for senior citizens aimed at raising awareness of various scams and protecting seniors from predatory practices. Police Chief Glenn Roberts, Lt. Michael Sweetman and Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer will be hosting a series of seminars focusing on telephone scams, handling telemarketers, home and personal safety, identity theft and dealing with contractors, Roberts said. The following dates have been set: “We hope that everyone takes advantage of this opportunity to come some new ways to protect your investments and increase your safety,” Roberts said.

Man tried to punch two officers, burn one with a cigarette lighter, authorities said.
A Freehold Borough man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest after he tried to punch two police officers and burn one with a cigarette lighter, police said. Darrick Flagg, 44, of First Street, was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and two counts of resisting arrest on April 21 after punching at and fleeing from two patrolmen trying to arrest him, Lt. Michael Sweetman said. Flagg’s mother called police before the incident asking if officers would take Flagg to a nearby hospital for a psychiatric examination. Brothers arrested Tuesday after traffic stop turns up cocaine
A pair of brothers were jailed on drug charges Tuesday when a traffic stop turned netted a large amount of cocaine, police said. Gareth Lewis, 36, of Freehold Borough and Dwane Prince, also 36, of Toms River, were arrested following a traffic stop on Enright Ave. around 7:21 p.m., charged with separate crimes, Lt. Michael Sweetman said. Lewis was charged with possession of several ounces of cocaine, possession of cocaine within 100 feet of a school zone, possession of paraphernalia and possession of a small amount of marijuana, Sweetman said. Car outruns officers from borough, township, reaching speeds of 80 mph.
Police from Freehold Borough and Township chased a silver Toyota sedan through both towns at speeds up to 80 mph Tuesday night before calling off the pursuit, police said Thursday. Borough Patrolman Sean Healey first spotted the car when the driver, traveling in excess of the speed limit, failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Center and Hudson, Lt. Michael Sweetman said. Healey attempted to pull the car off the road for a routine traffic violation. The driver evaded, Sweetman said. The chase took the Healey down Koslowski, Route 537, Route 79, East Freehold Road and Robertsville Road, Sweetman said. Two charges in connection with false information creating police response
A Neptune man was arrested and charged with creating a false alarm in Freehold Borough, according to an arrest warrant. Carlos L. Cartagena, 35, was arrested and charged on Tuesday with creating a false public alarm and giving false information to a 9-1-1 operator when he claimed another man had a gun, creating a large police response, according to the warrant. Cartagena’s bail was set at $10,000, the warrant says.

Resident faces three charges after he allegedly failed to stop for a Freehold Borough Police Officer and attempted to flee from him in his car and on foot.
A Freehold Borough Police Officer was not playing an April Fool's Day joke when he arrested and charged a Freehold resident who allegedly attempted to flee from him. Marlon Butts, 63, of Hudson Street, was charged with failing to stop for an officer, fleeing from an officer and operating a motor vehicle in a hazardous way. According to Butts’ complaint warrant, he purposely failed to stop his car for an officer who was signaling him to stop. Butts allegedly attempted to flee from the officer, his complaint warrant states that he operated his car in a way that created a substantial risk of death or injury to the public. The Freehold Borough Detective Bureau has been busy closing the department’s big cases, according to Freehold Borough Police Chief Glenn Roberts. Following the promotion of Sgt. Andrew Demuth to Detective Sgt., Roberts explained to Freehold Patch how hard the department has been working to keep the borough safe. “Crime stats go up and down all the time but it is how you close a case that counts. Freehold Borough Police charged a resident with burglary, theft and criminal mischief.
A Freehold man was arrested by Freehold Borough Police on March 28 after he allegedly took over $2,000 from a local business. Luis Colon-Rosario, 34, of Avenue A, was charged with one count of burglary and one count of theft following the Thursday incident. According to his complaint warrant, Rosario entered a Freehold business and removed $2,166 worth of cash and merchandise from the store. The complaint warrant did not specify what store the alleged incident occurred at. Rosario also faces a charge of criminal mischief because he allegedly damaged the front window of the business. The damage was valued between $500 and $2,000. Rosario has been remanded to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution on $85,000 bail.

A Freehold Borough resident faces a total of six weapon and robbery charges after he allegedly used a handgun to scare people into giving him money. Jordan Ellis, 20, of Jackson Street, was arrested following multiple alleged robberies. According to Ellis’ complaint warrant, On March 8 Ellis committed the act of robbery by threatening to harm a man and his family members if the victim did not make a withdraw from a Freehold Borough ATM. In January, Ellis allegedly brandished a black handgun on four different occasions. On Jan. 16 and Jan 23, Ellis is accused of forcing two men into withdrawing money from their bank accounts. A Freehold girl allegedly struck another person with a white piece of wood.
Freehold Borough Police arrested and charged a resident after she allegedly used a piece of white wood as a weapon. Everina Powell, 19, of Barkalow Avenue, faces three weapon related charges following a Thursday, Feb. 28 incident. According to her complaint warrant, Powell knowingly attempted to commit a serious bodily injury against another person by striking them with a piece of wood. Powell was allegedly found in possession of the piece of wood, she has been charged with two weapon possession charges and one charge of attempting to commit bodily harm. Powell has been remanded to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) on $125,000 bail.
