Man arrested and charged in connection with Thursday's shooting in Asbury Park
A Freehold Borough man was charged with murder in connection with a shooting in Asbury Park Thursday that left one man dead and another seriously wounded, authorities said Friday. Jamar S. Walker, 30, has been charged with murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Walker's cash bail was set at $1.5 million, according to a release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Following an argument in Asbury Park on Thursday, authorities say Walker shot Orlando Rowe, 30, of Bridgeport, Conn., and a 23-year old Freehold Borough man, whose name has not been released. Two charges in connection with false information creating police response
A Neptune man was arrested and charged with creating a false alarm in Freehold Borough, according to an arrest warrant. Carlos L. Cartagena, 35, was arrested and charged on Tuesday with creating a false public alarm and giving false information to a 9-1-1 operator when he claimed another man had a gun, creating a large police response, according to the warrant. Cartagena’s bail was set at $10,000, the warrant says.

The egg hunt will be on Saturday, March 23 at the Park Avenue School.
While Mother Nature has not made the weather feel like spring, Freehold Borough is kicking off the season with their annual Easter Egg Hunt. On Saturday, March 23 egg hunt participants will gather at the Park Avenue Elementary School at 10 a.m. to search the ground for Easter Eggs. “I have been told, that people should not be late because at 10:10 it’s done,” explained Freehold Borough Councilman Michael DiBenedetto. “The kids just run so fast to get those eggs, so you have to show up on time.” According to the National Weather Service, Saturday is expected to be sunny with a high of 46. In case of rain, the Easter Egg Hunt will be rescheduled for Saturday, March 30.

Freehold Borough residents can now pay their property taxes and water-sewer payments online through the borough website.
Freehold Borough residents can now pay two of their bills from the comfort of their own home thanks to a new online form. The Freehold Borough website, now has a specific page for residents who want to pay their property taxes and water-sewer payments online. Through the new page, residents just need to enter their property information and with just a few clicks, they can enter their payment. “This makes it very convenient for folks because now they don’t have to mail their payment,” said Councilman George Schnurr. “This makes it a little bit easier for folks who work during the day and now you can actually pay last minute. After two days without power in Freehold, town officials are asking residents to stay patient as New Jersey recovers from Hurricane Sandy. In Freehold Borough, Mayor Nolan Higgins said that trash collection services are on for Thursday morning. Higgins also mentioned that crews have been working to remove trees that fell during the storm. According to Higgins, more than 10 trees fell on homes in addition to a large number of wires and transformers. The Freehold Borough Fire Department and First Aid were busy Monday night and assisted in many calls to residents. Freehold Borough has been a Tree city for 15 years, Freehold Township for 31 years.
Freehold Borough and Freehold Township have been named Tree Cities by the Arbor Day Foundation, an honor both towns have become accustomed to over the years. There are 180 Tree Cities in New Jersey, including Colts Neck, Marlboro and Manalapan. Freehold Borough is running on its fifteenth year while Freehold Township has been a designated Tree City for the last 31 years. There are four standards to becoming a Tree City. The town must have a Tree Board of Department, a tree care ordinance, a community forestry program with a budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance or proclamation.
