Applications for annual singing competition being accepted now
Do you have the pipes to be the next Freehold Idol? The Downtown Freehold organization is accepting applications for the 2013 Freehold Idol auditions, to begin June 5. Singers 10 years old and up can show off their talent in the annual singing contest. Each week, singers will be judged and the best performers move to a final round. The top three vocalists receive prizes. The performances are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, in front of the Hall of Records. Performances will continue each week through Wednesday, Aug. 7. The finales will be held Wednesday, Aug. 14 and Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Calling all singers! Freehold Idol is now taking applications for their 2013 season. The local singing competition based off of the popular Fox television show is getting ready to come back to Freehold. Downtown Freehold is accepting applications for singers who think they have what it takes to become the next Freehold Idol. Singers must be 10-years-old or older. Auditions are scheduled between June 5 and Aug 7 at 7: 30 p.m. in front of the Hall of Records. The finales for the 2013 Freehold Idol will be on Aug. 21 for singers between the ages 10 and 15 and on Aug. 14 for singers in the 16 through 22 age group and 23-plus age group. A Freehold Idol was named Wednesday night for the 16 to 22 age group and the 23 and older age group.
Music lovers braved the stormy weather Wednesday night and made their way to the American Hotel to find out who would be named the 2012 Freehold Idol. Over a 10 week span, many contestants showed three judges what they were made of with their own renditions of classic and popular songs, just like the hit Fox television show, American Idol. Wednesday was the finale for two age groups; the 16 to 22-year-old group which had 11 participants and the 23 and older group, which had seven singers going for the title of 2012 Freehold Idol. In the end there could only be one Freehold Idol for each age group. The title for the 16 to 22 age group went to Shannon Rakow, 20, of Jackson. The sixth annual event will feature talented singers from around the region competing in downtown Freehold.
Get ready to be blown away by the regions best singers, because Freehold Idol is back. Downtown Freehold in association with The Breeze 107.1 fm 99.7 will host the sixth annual Freehold Idol starting on Wednesday, June 6th at 7:30 p.m. The contest is held every Wednesday thereafter through August 8th, followed by two finale weeks. The free event is held at the Hall of Records in Freehold. Contestants will please audiences by featuring the region's talented vocalists in many popular styles including chanteuses, rockers, folk singers, and R&B belters. The 2011 Freehold Idol finale for the 10- to 14-year-old age group produced the first tie in the local singing competition’s four-year history. Judges Neal Girandola, Brenda K. Starr and Joe Orlando heard 14 winners from earlier rounds of the competition perform Wednesday, Aug. 24 in front of the Hall of Records building in Freehold. When the judges’ votes were tallied, Emily Bennett, 12, of Howell, and Andrew Malabunga, 12, of Robbinsville, came out on top. Bennett sang “I Dreamed a Dream,” and Malabunga performed "Faithfully." The last Freehold Idol of the summer 2011 season will be held Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in front of the Hall of Records building. Performers who made it past earlier rounds of the local amateur singing competition will perform in the second night of the two-part finale. Last week, performers in the 15- to 22-year-old age bracket and the over 23 years category competed in the first night of the finale.
