This year Freehold-Colts Neck will be holding its annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life to support the fight for a cancer-free world on June 1st and 2nd at the Freehold Raceway.

Services for Buonocore will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the Higgins Memorial Home.
Rose Buonocore of Freehold died on Feb. 8, 2013 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune Township after a brief illness. She was a beloved mother, a devoted friend and a shrewd businesswoman to all those who had the privilege of knowing her. Born in Hoboken, Buonocore and her family moved to Freehold in the late 50's. She was a community and political fundraiser. She was most proud of her contribution for the development of CentraState Medical Center. Employed as a pari-mutuel worker at the age of 35, she was one of the first women to work at Freehold Raceway, the oldest racetrack in the country. She loved her job and worked until she retired in 2002. Buonocore and her husband Philip, who died in 1976, enjoyed owning racehorses. …

On Saturday, Freehold held its first ever all day racing, family fun, and educational event with the Open Space Pace Festival. The Festival began by taking over Freehold Borough with a “Parade of Horses” down Main Street. The day continued at Freehold Raceway with celebrity and amateur races, live music, and family fun, while attendees learned about the importance of open space in the Garden State. Open Space Pace and Festival of Horses will be an all day event on Saturday, Sept. 29 dedicated to the preservation of open space in New Jersey and support for the state animal, the horse. A New Jersey nonprofit organization is looking to the Freehold Raceway as a way to promote their mission. At the March 19 Freehold Borough Council meeting, Open Space Pace, a non-profit corporation, presented an event to the Council that would create a local interest for horse racing and perserve New Jersey Open Space. The event, which will take place in September, will raise money and promote horse racing, in hopes of preserving New Jersey Open Space that is currently used by horse farms. After the presentation, Councilman George Schnurr explained that if horse farms are sold, their land will lead to new housing developments, which means a rise in the number of children that need to be educated. “As a direct result of loosing the horse …

The Freehold Raceway, America’s oldest pari-mutuel harness track, is back in action starting March 1 with the opening of a 90-day spring meet. According to the Freehold Raceway website, the track will mark opening day with a special $13.95 buffet in the Renaissance Dining Room. They will also give out a free six-pack cooler to patrons who purchase a Freehold live program, while supplies last. What a rip-off. Paid $15 for the "privilege" of standing behind the fenced off "VIP" area - felt like I was behind the Berlin wall!! No mention on the website that you had to bring your own chairs. A guy with one of the bands was handing his pass to friends in the "cheap" no seats section so that they could gain access to the VIP chairs.
