Mark your calendars for these important April school dates.

Now that spring break is over, summer vacation does not seem that far away. With three months left in the school year, April marks the beginning of the final stretch, however, there are some days worth noting this month. Monday, April 1 – Students on Spring Break Tuesday, April 2 – Students return to school Monday, April 8 – Freehold Borough Board of Education meeting with new Superintendent Dr. Rocco Tomazic. The meeting will be held in the Park Avenue Elementary School and will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 24 – Kindergarten registration begins in the Freehold Learning Center Media Lab. State Asks Freehold Schools to Budget Federal Grants at 75%

With March 1 sequester looming, district budgets are being drafted with decreased federal funding in mind.

With the sequester going into effect Friday, March 1, Freehold Borough and Freehold Township schools are budgeting the federal grants portion of their 2013-2014 district budget at 75 percent. According to a White House announcement, New Jersey faces cuts close to $30 million as well as drastic cuts made to health care programs and environmental protection now that Congress failed to halt $85 billion in "sequestration" spending cuts. Following the announcement, Freehold school business administrators explained that they do not know how the sequester could further impact their budgets. “The state has asked us to budget our federal grants for 2014 at 75 percent of what they are for 2013,” said Freehold Township School Business Administrator …

Freehold Township Committee Recognizes Read Across America

Read Across America will kick off in Freehold Schools Friday, March 1.

The Freehold Township Committee took some time out of their meeting Monday night to recognize the importance of reading. Friday, March 1 will begin Read Across America in Freehold Township schools. To help kick off the event, Mayor Barbara McMorrow presented a proclamation to Assistant Superintendent Janet Creech, to show the committee’s support of Read Across America.  “The most important thing is that our children become calm, fluent readers and we hope that as they grow older they take those skills with them,” said Creech after receiving the proclamation. “A child who reads 20 minutes a day, it doesn’t matter what it is, will increase their likelihood of being successful in higher education." Freehold Township BOE Approves 2013-2014 Calendar

The Freehold Township Board of Education (BOE) approved the Superintendent’s recommendation for the 2013-2014 calendar.

While the calendar has only recently changed to 2013, the Freehold Township Board of Education (BOE) is already looking towards the 2013-2014 school year. At the Tuesday, Feb. 12 Freehold Township BOE meeting, board members accepted the superintendent’s recommendation for the 2013-2014 academic calendar.  For parents looking to plan next year’s vacations, here is how the 2013-2014 school year is scheduled to run. UPDATE: School Event Cancellations Continue in Freehold

Activities are canceled due to weather.

This story was updated at noon and 1:20 p.m. with additional cancellations from Freehold schools. In preparation for the upcoming snowstorm, the Freehold Borough School District has canceled all evening and afterschool activities. According to the district’s website, after-school activities may be canceled if the storm prediction changes. At this time, schools are operating under a regular schedule today.  Freehold Township's district website notes that the Marshall W. Errickson third grade social scheduled for tonight has been canceled. All afterschool activities that begin after 5 p.m. on Friday have been canceled as well as all activities scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9.
