Howell Dentist Charged With Invasion of Privacy

The Freehold resident is accused of putting a Nanny Cam in his office restroom.

A Howell Dentist was arrested on Wednesday after an investigation revealed a "Nanny Cam" had been set up in his patient restroom.  Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd announced on Friday night that Dr. Scott M. Meltzer, 49, of Freehold faces five counts of invasion of privacy. According to Dodd the camera, which is believed to have been installed on April 4, was motion activated and "aimed toward the toilet and may have recorded any person that used the restroom." The practice is located in the Candlewood Commons. Dodd said so far five victims have been identified leading to the five charges. She said the counts are for "recording an image of another person whose intimate parts were exposed, without that person's consent and under circumstances in …

Freehold Resident Injured in Howell Crash

Driver reportedly not wearing seatbelt.

A crash on Fort Plains Road left an 18-year-old Freehold resident with minor injuries to her leg and shoulder after she was reportedly not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.  Detective Sgt. Eileen Dodd of the Howell Police Department reported that at around 9:20 a.m. on Friday Elaina Malfa was driving south on Fort Plains Road when she crossed the center lane while coming around a bend. At that time she struck a 2013 Ford Escape which was being driven by 47-year-old Ellen Caruso-Garland of Jackson.  Malfa's car reportedly skidded out of control after impact and overturned several times before hitting a 2006 Acura TL driven by Michael Tamburrino, 42, of Jackson.  Dodd said after the accident Malfa was taken to CentraState …

Freehold Bus Driver's Vehicle Struck in Route 33 Accident

Eatontown driver allegedly fled the scene after accident that closed roadway.

Following a crash that closed part of Route 33 for more than an hour Tuesday afternoon, the Howell Police Department has charged an Eatontown resident involved in the accident on several charges.  Capt. Andy Kudrick said 25-year-old Freedom Young was driving west on Route 33 when he moved into the eastbound lane and hit a car driven by Mary Hilsher, 62, of Spring Lake. Young's car continued moving and struck an empty school bus driven by 39-year-old Freehold resident Karen Levers. Kudrick said Young's car then struck a car driven by Mary Noto, 51, of Brick. After finally coming to a stop Kudrick said Young fled the scene and ran onto the property of the Monmouth County Fire Academy. He was then seen inside the property of the neighboring …

UPDATE: No Injuries Reported From WaWa Robbery

The Howell Police Department is searching for a suspect in the robbery of the WaWa at the intersection of Route 9 and White Street Monday night. Capt. Andy Kudrick said the robbery happened around 9:45 when a suspect described as being a white male, around 5-9 with facial stubble with curly or 'afro-like' dark brown hair approached an attendant inside a kiosk at the fueling station. Kudrick said the man was wearing a black zip-up "hoodie," and held what was described as a steak knife to the attendant's throat while demanding cash. After getting the cash from the attendant he fled in a dark colored vehicle believed to be a Subaru BRZ or a Scion FR-S that was black or purple. UPDATE: Roof Work Started Athena Diner Fire

No injuries reported following blaze

Update, 8:50 p.m.: Work on the roof of the former Regent Diner contributed to a fire that caused the Howell Police Department to shut down a portion of Route 9 during Friday's rush hour traffic.  Sgt. Rizzo of the Howell Police Department reported that at approximately 6:30 p.m. Stevens Roofing Company continued its second day of working on the roof of the Athena Diner when the fire started. The fire continued to go through the kitchen and the restaurant through the walls.  There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire with all employees and customers able to get out of the restaurant safely.  The Southard, Freewood Acres, Ramtown, Adelphia and Squankum Fire Departments all responded to the scene as did the Howell and Ramtown …

UPDATE Jan. 26 12:33 p.m.: Jeffrey Smith, 18, of Farmingdale died Friday at 5 p.m. from injuries suffered in a crash on Herbertsville Road the previous day, a spokesperson for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office confirmed. Smith was seriously injured and two more were transported to a local hospital following a crash on Herbertsville Road Thursday afternoon. Ptl. Freehold Couple Injured in Herbertsville Road Crash

Roadway was closed for several hours.

One driver was seriously injured and two more were transported to a local hospital following a crash on Herbertsville Road Thursday afternoon. Ptl. Scott Brooks of the Howell Police Department reported that a little before 3 p.m. 18-year-old Farmingdale resident Jeffrey Smith was driving a 1997 Toyota Corolla south on Herbertsville Road when he unexplainably crossed the center line near the Circle A Horse Farm. After crossing the road, Smith collided with a 2001 Honda driven by 74-year-old Nicholas Spinelli of Freehold. Also in the car was Spinelli's wife Concetta.  Brooks said following the crash Smith was trapped in his car and sustained "serious head injuries." He was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center after being removed …

Special Agent Accidentally Shoots Himself at Police Academy Gun Range

Transported to Jersey Shore for treatment of a gunshot wound to the foot.

Update, 3:10 p.m.: Bill Quinn, a spokesman for the New Jersey Treasury Department identified the Special Agent Trainee as Steven Raimondo who had worked as a civil investigator with the Division of Taxation for 12 years. Quinn said Raimondo began training for his new position four months ago. Quinn said Raimondo is expected to recover from his injuries and be able to return to work.   Update, 1:45 p.m.: An initial report by the Howell Police Department indicated the individual shot was a recruit. Howell Police Investigating Pep Boys Crash

Only minor injuries reported

One customer was hurt when a car crashed through the front of a local business last week.  According to Ptl. Scott Brooks of the Howell Police Department a 71-year-old man drove his 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer through the front of the Pep Boys on Route 9 last Thursday afternoon. Brooks said the driver reported his foot slipping off the break and hitting the gas sending the car over the curb and through the window.  Brooks said the crash damaged the windows and the framing as the driver also attempted unsuccessfully to back out of the building. The driver of the car was uninjured but a customer reportedly suffered a minor leg injury from flying debris and was taken for treatment at CentraState Medical Center.  The store was temporarily …

Freehold Resident Charged After Crashing Into Howell Business

Accident happened early Thursday morning

The Howell Police Department responded to the scene of a crash at 4 a.m. on Thursday morning at the intersection of Route 524 and Wyckoff Mills Road.  According to Capt. Andy Kudrick of the Howell Police Department when Ptl. David MacNeil responded to the scene he found a 2002 Acura driven by 21-year-old Freehold resident Michael Miranda had crashed into the Temp Rite Heating and Cooling business at the intersection. A preliminary investigation revealed that Miranda had been driving north on Wyckoff Mills Rd. "at a high rate of speed," according to Kudrick. Miranda then attempted to stop quickly and began to skid which resulted in him going across Route 524 and into the local business. Miranda suffered a laceration to his head and a foot …
