New Jersey Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board Executive Director David Kurasz wants fire sprinklers in newly constructed homes.
The following letter is from Freehold Township Mayor Anthony Ammiano and Committeeman-Elect Tom Cook.
Dear Freehold Patch, On November 6th, we had the honor of being elected to the Township Committee of Freehold Township. We wish to publicly thank the voters for their support and the confidence they have placed in us. It is humbling to represent such a fine community, and continue the tradition of outstanding local government. Freehold Township has always been a model of how local government is supposed to work. And while not perfect, Freehold Township has continually had a stable tax rate, outstanding services and a professional business approach to governing. We are committed to keeping our community the wonderful place it is to live, work and raise a family. Wishing you and your families a wonderful holiday season, Anthony J. Ammiano …

Bicycling organizations throughout state call on both bike riders and drivers to work together.
Dear Editor, Tensions between bicyclists and motorists are in the spotlight this summer and we believe it’s time we all took more responsibility for cooling the confrontation and sharing the road. We represent bicycle clubs and organizations with over 2,000 members in NW and Central NJ. Each of us is also a motorist. We understand sharing the road from behind the wheel of a car as well as on a bicycle. We are as upset as anyone when a bicyclist does not ride safely or a group of cyclists block the road and surround a car as reportedly happened in Tewksbury this summer. Our organizations train riders on safe road sharing, criticize riders who do not, and are ready to work with police and town officials to make the roads safe for all. We …
Judi Guy, an active Freehold community member, shares her thoughts on politics happening in the borough.
Jumping Ship? A wise friend told me to “never discuss politics or religion with friends, family or foe. Most people are already set in their ways and it only creates tension and animosity.” I guess I’m not as wise as my friend, because here I go diving into the dangerous world of politics. Although I’m now a Township resident, I have lived most of my life in the Borough. It’s where I still do a lot of volunteer work. It’s a great community and I try to stay current on what’s happening there. Recently I learned that prominent Republicans in the Borough are jumping ship and joining the Democratic Party. My first thoughts were, okay, they must have had some sort of epiphany that converted them to Democrats. I will admit the Democratic ticket…

A dog being fostered by a Cuddly Creatures Animal Rescue volunteer in Raintree was missing for 34 days, but found his way home with the help of local citizens.
I just wanted to give our deepest thanks to everyone who supported us throughout this whole ordeal with Sheldon, and helped us to bring him back to the rescue safely. We are truly thankful to all of those who helped us in so many ways! There were those who posted his picture on internet sites, on telephone poles and who handed out flyers in the local area. Those who called us with sightings to lead us in the right direction. Those who took time out of their days to comb the streets and woods looking for him on foot and by car. Those who lent us humane traps, and others who helped us set up and man feeding stations in the hopes of pinpointing his location, so we could ultimately catch him. We'd also like to thank all of you for your kind …

All this sadness came with a wonderful ending. The people that sacrificed their time should be praised for their tireless efforts. That is what brought Sheldon home safe and well.   more ›
Will Fernandez, Freehold Borough resident, is asking drivers to abide by the speed limit and for police to enforce the violators.
Dear Editor, I am a concerned citizen of Freehold Boro. My house is located on South Street between Park Avenue and Barkalow. My concern is the speeding that occurs on South Street on a DAILY basis. The speed limit is 30 MPH. As you drive on South Street and pass Barkalow and head toward the township the speed limit increases to 35 MPH. I am amazed how fast most of the cars drive past my house. Every time I take out the garbage, recycling or when I'm cutting my front lawn, I am shocked to see vehicles driving at such a high rate of speed. 30 MPH? It feels more like 50 MPH! Freehold Boro is a "walking community", meaning, most of their residents walk the sidewalks all over town. I see mothers with their children in tow and I fear for their …

Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer shares how a personal experience with the squad reminded her of their importance.
As is so often the case, we do not realize the true value of something until we need it or until we lose it. I have always held the Freehold First Aid Squad in the highest regard: my husband and I always send checks during the annual fund drives, we always put signs in our yard urging other to donate money, and I always say all of the right words when publicly extolling the squad. It was not, however, until I watched the squad members help save my husband’s life that I fully realized the worth of these individuals who unselfishly volunteer their time and their knowledge to serve the residents of the Freeholds. To see these dedicated and caring individuals come into a home and take over the care of a loved one is truly awe inspiring. It …

The largest problem in the Boro with bicycling are the kids, guesstimating ages 9 to 17, who are too self-preoccupied to notice they are on a road and who probably are too cool to follow the rules. Zigzagging, swerving and pack-following have been the rules this summer all over the streets. Isn't it time to pick up the bicycling education and reminders?   more ›
