Update, 1 p.m.: This story was updated with additional information from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. --- JERSEY SHORE -- A Keansburg woman was pushing a child in a stroller as she shopped in the Middletown Bed Bath & Beyond when she was stabbed 12 times, according to authorities. The victim did not know 19-year-old Tyrik S. Haynes, the Middletown man accused of trying to kill her Thursday afternoon, Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) spokesperson Charles Webster said. A rabid bat was found in the Lincroft section of Middletown after the bat had an altercation with a dog in the area of Byrna Drive, according to the Middletown Township Health Department. The dog was up-to-date on its rabies vaccination and only needed to receive a rabies booster and a 45-day quarantine, according to Health Department Director Rich DeBenedetto. This new report brings the total number of wild animals testing positive for Rabies this year to five. Four raccoons tested positive earlier this year. Residents are advised to make sure all domestic animals are currently vaccinated with a rabies shot. Brookdale Community College closed the college's chemistry wing after a mercury spill.
Brookdale Community College’s chemistry wing on its Lincroft campus is expected to reopen later today after a wall barometer holding five pounds of mercury broke in the hallway between two chemistry learning assistant’s offices. Chemistry classrooms and learning assitants' offices were evacuated after the spill. A chemistry learning assistant reported at 9:53 a.m. that a thermometer in the hallway between offices had broken and that there was mercury on the ground. The thermometer had allegedly broken overnight, said Brookdale Community College spokeswoman Avis McMillon. Runners in the 152-mile run in remembrance of NJ fallen soldiers make stops at several local spots en route from Cape May to Holmdel.
Onlookers sitting in beach chairs and sporting local high school football jerseys hooted, hollered and waved in support as three runners trotted their flags over the Shrewsbury River Bridge into Rumson around 3 p.m. Sunday, when the New Jersey Run for the Fallen made its way into the Two River area. Teams of active and reserve military (in running gear) made the 152 mile journey from Cape May to Holmdel to honor New Jersey service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every mile of the trek the runners stopped to present a flag and personalized biographical card to family and friends of a fallen soldier. Late yesterday afternoon, Middletown officials got the go-ahead from state and county authorities to call for mandatory evacuations in certain spots in the township, mostly east of Route 36. Today, firemen and police are riding around the township in those designated areas and alerting people that they must leave if they haven't yet. A command center at town hall is now in full operation. The following are two full notices released by officials: Middletown Mayor Fiore and the Office of Emergency Management have declared a mandatory evacuation as a result of impending Hurricane Irene. Reds, I agree with you. There are many available jobs but the people on welfare and collecting unemployment DON'T want to work. They actually get more handed to them that way. They will get reduced housing, food stamps and utility assistance. WHY WORK - they say. The difference here is middle income and high income people have to work to support their lifestyle.
