Freehold Borough and Township schools are taking extra safety measures following last week’s Connecticut school shooting.
In the wake of the tragic school shooting that took 26 lives, Freehold schools are doing what they can to keep students feeling safe in the classroom. The same day that news broke of the Newtown school shootings, Freehold Borough and Freehold Township school administrators took to the Internet to share their thoughts, condolences, and provided tips on how to proceed. In Freehold Borough, Superintendent Elizabeth O'Connell shared a message on the district’s website with tips on how to speak to students about the shooting. An example of the tips provided were speaking with children about the event and how school is still a safe place where teachers are always ensuring their safety. WEST DEPTFORD, NJ -- Mary Sherlach looked forward to spending more time on Owasco Lake during her retirement. She and her husband, Bill, owned a cabin along the Finger Lakes in upstate New York. Mary Sherlach was one year away from retirement. But on Friday morning, her life ended in the second most deadly school shooting in American history. Sherlach, 56, was school psychologist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, where a gunman opened fire, killing 26 people, including 20 children. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, also killed his mother, who was a teacher at the school, according to reports. He died in the rampage at the school, bringing the death toll to 28.
