“To educate a person in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society.” -Theodore Roosevelt

School is about teaching more than English, math and science. It is also about building character, modeling behavior and nurturing all children. “What we do today and what we do after today honors the children of Newtown, but more importantly it honors the children in our schools today,” said Dr. Maurice Elias, director of clinical training at the Rutgers University Department of Psychology, a nationally recognized expert in community and preventive psychology and school intervention, during his keynote speech at a New Jersey School Boards Association forum, “Safe and Secure Schools: Perspectives after Newtown,” at The College of New Jersey on Friday morning. “The data are speaking to us very clearly that the climate of the school is part …

Poll: What Are Your Thoughts on Armed Officers in Schools?

Vote in our poll to give your opinion on armed officers in schools.

A month after the Newton school shooting rocked the nation; residents are still weighing in on gun control and school safety. In many Monmouth County towns, schools are working with their police forces to ensure safety. In response to updates from Patch editors, readers are commenting that schools need more protection and using outlets on Patch to express their concerns and as a way to call others residents to action. Marlboro made headlines earlier this month, when armed officers became a visible site in all Marlboro schools. In an article from Marlboro-Colts Neck Patch, the Marlboro Board of Education said that the decision to temporarily place officers in every school would cost the district an estimated $100,000 for 90 days.  Other …

100% agree, we need to ensure our children's safety at ANY cost! i live in a town where our taxes are over the top, why not allocate a portion of our already-too-high-taxes to make sure when we send our kids to school they return safely every day? I would imagine given this same question, Newtown, Columbine and all other parents of kids sitting innocently in their classrooms, colleges, movie …   more ›

Especially in the case of family court matters because let's face it, no one is perfect. And, that expectation is unfair to put on anyone. However, law enforcement carry weapons 24 hours a day. I might want to see every police officer lawfully allowed to carry a weapon/service revolver, a batton, and police badge sign in at the front desk at any K-8 school on a MONTHLY basis for notification to …   more ›

Learning the Laws About Driving Near School Buses

As back-to-school season looms, remember to drive safely around school buses and while in walking districts.

Freehold Township and Freehold Borough students will be getting back behind their schools desks this week for a new year, which means those yellow buses, crossing guards, and walking students, will flood the roadways. Take our small refresher course to keep our kids safe: Penalties for passing a stopped school bus include fines and up to five points on a driver's license.  Even though big yellow school buses won't be dropping students off at Borough schools, safety precautions are still needed in the walking district. At the Tuesday Freehold Borough Council meeting, the topic of safety in a walking school district came up multiple times. In the public comment section of the meeting, Annette Jordan, President of the Freehold Borough Board …
