Downtown Freehold became a sea of Kelly green on Sunday as hundreds of area residents came out to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The Freehold Borough Arts Council and the local Ancient Order of Hibernians presented the parade. According to the Freehold St. Patrick’s Day Parade Facebook page, the parade was only 747.5 feet long, but featured Grand Marshals, Irish Step dancing performances, bagpipes and the Monmouth County Police and Fire Pipe and Drum Corp. Several towns are putting on parades with bagpipers, drums, floats and clowns for St. Patrick's Day 2013. Wear something green and bring the camera! Both parades are less than half a mile, but which is shorter?
Does size really matter? The battle of St. Patrick's Day pride is on the line as Freehold and Matawan compete for the shortest Irish-themed parade. With the tagline "Parade starts at 6; party starts at 6:05," it's hard to beat Washington Engine Company's swagger for throwing their third annual Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade down Jackson Street in Matawan. Measuring a mere 0.2 of a mile, Google Maps estimates it would take the average person three minutes to walk from the corner of Spring Street to the corner of Church Street. Irish Week in Freehold Borough will begin Tuesday, March 12 and will continue through St. Patrick's Day.
In a few weeks, Freehold will be seeing green, with the kick off of Irish Week. Starting on March 12, Downtown Freehold will begin its St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with Irish Week featuring local food, drink and music. From 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday March 12 and Wednesday March 13, Downtown Freehold will host the Flavor of Freehold. Ticket holders will be able to experience some of Freehold’s most loved restaurants and shops. A complete list of participating businesses can be seen here. Get your Irish on right here in Freehold starting Monday night through St. Patty’s Day. For the first time in its history, Downtown Freehold, in association with the Freehold Borough Arts Council, will celebrate all things Irish during the week of March 12 through March 17, culminating in St. Patrick's Day revelry.
