Program offered to kids aged 12-16
The Freehold Borough Police Department is scheduled to hold its annual Youth Police Academy Program from July 22-Aug. 2. The program is offered to kids between the ages of 12 and 16. The deadline to apply is Friday June, 21, 2012. The YPA is a condensed version of the actual police academy. It is an intense program that includes drill instruction with real drill instructors, daily physical training and inspections, according to a release. Students will receive instruction and presentations from a variety of different agencies ranging from the FBI and Secret Service to the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and New Jersey State Police, according to a release. Three officers were honored at the Monday night Freehold Borough Council meeting for their involvement in the Youth Police Academy (YPA).
Time was taken out of the Freehold Borough Council meeting, to honor three police officers who dedicate their time to help run the Freehold Borough Youth Police Academy (YPA). The YPA has been running in Freehold Borough for the last five years. It is a summer program designed to bring the community and police department closer together. Through the two-week program, Freehold Borough children are given an opportunity to experience what law enforcement is all about and get a better understanding of it. “Everyone hears how great the program is, but few realize what it takes to make a program like this happen. The two-week summer program is free and applications are due on June 8.
Around 30 kids will have to opportunity to experience a 2-week police academy boot camp through the Freehold Borough Police Department this summer. The Freehold Borough Youth Police Academy runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. every weekday from July 23 through Aug. 3. The program is free and open to local students age 12 to 16-years-old. “It is just like the real police academy,” explained Steppat. “This is not your average summer camp. The kids will learn how to march and if the don’t do it right, they will have to do push-ups. Teens in the 2011 Freehold Borough Youth Police Academy contended with record heat, intense drill instructors and miles of running. By the end of the two-week camp, the 27 recruits were rewarded for the efforts with praise by their instructors and the admiration of their family and friends. Our daughter participated in this program and had a great time. It is a truly worthwhile program, and we appreciate the work and sacrifices the officers made to make the program so interesting for the children.
