The party will be courtesy of the TV Network Destination American and USA WEEKEND.
Union Beach has won an "over-the-top" Fourth of July celebration on the beachfront, thanks to its ex-Fire Dept. Chief who nominated the Hurricane Sandy-devastated Bayshore town in a national contest sponsored by the TV network Destination America and USA WEEKEND. The 2 mile-square town was selected with Fayetteville, NC as being "most deserving" among 3,500 entries submitted in March. The judges were swayed by Union Beach resident Robert LaBerta's 500-word essay. In it, LaBerta wrote, "I'm a humble 37-year resident of a small NJ town. During Superstorm Sandy, 90% of our town was flooded and many homes destroyed. The residents of my small town came together to not only rebuild but save each other emotionally. I had the honor of being the …

DEP Commissioner: side scan sonar used to detect sunken debris; Tourism Commissioner: rental market is healthy
Though immense devastation from Superstorm Sandy remains visible up and down the New Jersey coastline, beaches, boardwalks and even rental homes are ready for the annual influx of summer tourists that will begin this weekend, officials said Thursday at the annual "State of the Shore" event in Belmar. The State of the Shore report is presented by state officials and the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium every year before Memorial Day weekend kicks off, but this year it evolved to mark the unofficial reopening of the Shore area following Sandy. With emergency repairs to state and local infrastructure damaged by the storm now complete, work has started on the state's long term recovery, said Bob Martin, commissioner of the state Department of …

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven'…

Freehold Township TGI Friday's among those targeted by year-long investigation.
More than 1,000 bottles of booze were seized from 29 New Jersey bars, including a Freehold Township TGI Friday's, by more than 100 state agents Wednesday at the conclusion of a year-long investigation called “Operation Swill,’’ authorities said Thursday. The investigation alleges that the bars and restaurants — a dozen TGI Friday's among them — filled premium alcoholic beverage bottles with cheaper alcohol in an attempt to fool customers and increase profits, authorities have said. Customers paid for the premium brand, but were instead poured a non-premium substitute, the release says. Acting on tips and consumer complaints, samples were taken in January and February when ABC investigators visited 63 licensed establishments across the …
