Dear Tired O'Whining, I don't think people are looking for gov handouts, just asking to be treated fairly. We all have been effected by first, the storm and then by the confusion caused by FEMA. Most of us have assumed responsibility for our choice to live at the shore and have paid for insurance for many years, but we were blindsided by FEMA in the middle of a disaster with new maps, new compliance regulations and unreasonable insurance premiums to follow soon. I have never heard of any other state being treated by FEMA/our government in the aftermath of a disaster the way we have been treated. Many of us have been living in our bedrooms, cooking in our bathrooms with crockpots, while waiting for our insurance checks to begin rebuilding. It has been extremely frustrating and stressful not knowing what to do next and not getting any answers from the people who are causing the problems. Your judgement of us and this situation is way out of line.

Biggert-Waters National Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 - Voted on and approved by each and every NJ State Representative eliminated Federal funding of NFIP. This is what drives our new insurance premiums and has eliminated any "grandfathering" of previously built homes. Our real problem started in August, 2012, before Sandy's destruction brought it to light. When these people run for re-election, remember this and vote wisely!

What a wonderful thing these people are doing! We were lucky. All of our pictures were kept in plastic containers on the second floor, but I know many people that I will forward this information to. I know how grateful they will be for this service. I want to say thank you on their behalf.

This is all good info, but how do we apply if we believe we may be eligible? Is it in the article and I am just missing it? Any further information regarding these grant programs would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you.

I have been saying all along that so many people have it much worse than we do. I am so very sorry to hear what you have been going through. It's disgraceful how you are being treated!

I'm sure we are not alone, Tom. Many of our friends and neighbors are either living upstairs, at family member's homes, or in rentals. We all just want our homes back, but for some this might not be an option. We all have to wait for FEMA to finalize the flood map first before decisions can be made.

If anyone had told me on Halloween that we'd still be living upstairs in our bedrooms on Easter, I never would have believed them!

Hey SoylentGreen - Don't forget those that live in areas where earthquakes are commonplace. Doesn't FEMA help them after a disaster? How about tornado alley? Should everyone live underground? Then there's those that live in places where wildfires happen every year. Why should residents of the Jersey Shore have to bail out FEMA and the NFIP for mis-management after Hurricane Katrina? Did everyone in New Orleans rebuild to any new "stronger & safer" standards? Were new and "improved" maps issued for the gulf area after Katrina? I believe that the levies were repaired and improved, but I haven't heard anything about the flood maps changing for that area. We all are very tired of paying . . . Paying flood insurance premiums for 20+ years and when the time comes it's needed - it isn't there! Oh, but don't forget there's billions to send to other countries! Yes, we all are very tired, SoylentGreen.
Hopefully, wherever your home is that you have chosen well and never need to rebuild after some type of disaster.

Donald - It is very disturbing to me and I am sure everyone else that read your comment that we are all waiting for government hand outs. We are not. The insurance that we have bought and paid for over 20 years is not a "hand out". So far, many of my friends and neighbors have yet to received anything from either their insurance or FEMA. We do not ask for any of the millions of dollars from caring, generous people -people unlike you - that donated to Sandy recovery. It is intended for those much less fortunate and in greater need. I suppose those are the hand-outs you were referring to. We are however very tired of listening to political rhetoric full of empty promises and then having to read nasty comments like yours. So in the future, maybe try developing some compasion and please keep your negative, hurtful comments to yourself.
