On the article Wednesday: Matawan Planning/Zoning Board to Hear Quick Chek Application

Bernie, those of us who do not know they've been removed from Quick Chek do not know that because...we have stopped going there. And if they've simply been relocated to a location less than a mile down the road, that really hasn't solved anything. It still means people are not going to want to patronize the businesses around the train station.

Could you be a little more specific in how everyone is supposedly "clueless"? Or are you another one of those who like to hide behind YOUR PC to act superior to others without having to face them?

You don't need a license, but loitering is illegal and there are numerous signs warning against it. They could get ticketed, but for some reason the police do not seem to care.

Just realized my response turned into a little rant that seems unrelated to the article, but my point was supposed to be that moving closer to the train station won't help the situation (as evidenced by the other businesses/buildings near the train station), and they need to address these issues before worrying about whether they have a gas station.

ReplyEveryone else has pretty much already made the points I was going to make. I live nearby although technically in Old Bridge, but I go through the downtown Matawan area often and USED to patronize businesses there. I stopped going to the 7-11 years ago because of the number of people hanging out outside. After 7-11 closed and they all moved over to Quik Check, I stopped patronizing that store and the liquor store next door, for the same reason. Despite signs warning against loitering there (both locations), I have seen police go by or even sit in a nearby lot, and never do anything about it. Now a few weeks ago there was a dead body found in an abandoned building by the train station. What has happened to Matawan in the last few years? I used to walk down Main Street to shop, and now it is on its way to becoming a "lock your doors and roll up your windows as you drive through" town.

ReplyThe police need to enforce the no-loitering policy. Groups of people hang out there all the time, just as they did at the 7-11 before it closed. They will hang out right by the no-loitering signs. I realize most of those hanging out there are illegal immigrants looking for work and not drug dealers, but allowing groups of people to hang out encourages illegal activity. This is why I stopped going to the 7-11, and why I no longer patronize this Quick Chek.

ReplyI would love to see Virgin Mobile do something similar, especially as up until a couple of days ago, I had to drive several miles to even be able to use my phone. (for the first few days after the storm, that distance was nearly 20 miles). But as they say, you do get what you pay for.

I'm wondering who you called, too. I never got anything but the runaround when I called them.

ReplyPower came back on in my part of Old Bridge since the evening of 11/5. I was away for the night but that is what my neighbors told me when I returned. Still waiting for JCP&L to call and tell me that. While i am VERY happy to have power, especially as I know many still do not, I am very dissatisfied with JCP&L's refusal to give any kind of information. I called one morning after sleeping in my car, which was warmer than my house, and was basically told it would be on by Wednesday, unless it took longer. Another time when I called and waited on hold for 15 minutes, I was told they could not find an active account at my address, and transferred me so I could wait on hold with someone else (I didn't, as I was running out of minutes on my phone). Which is interesting, because the automated system had no problem finding my account every time I called. The lack of communication was the most frustrating thing. If they would just communicate clearly with their customers, we could make alternate plans instead of calling them every day and being told nothing.

Glad I am not the only one wondering about the Walgreens. I can't imagine where a fitness center would go if the Walgreens leaves, unless this includes the building nearby that used to be the Motor Vehicles office. I say just stop building stuff already, before rt. 34 becomes like rt. 18 in East Brunswick.
